NELC – Infant Feeding Team

We support parents/carers with making informed decisions on feeding their babies, supporting them to achieve their feeding goals. We can provide care which is mother/carer and family centred, non-judgemental, and supports and respects individual’s decisions.

Breastfeeding gives your baby/babies the best start in life. It is recommended that you breastfeed for the first 6 months of life. It is easily absorbed, naturally designed and adapts to promote growth and development. The milk that a baby received when breastfeeding contains:

  • antibodies
  • enzymes
  • nutrients
  • properties that help protect babies from diseases and infection

Breastfeeding can also protect your baby from a wide range or infections, allergies and diseases. Links have also been made with increased development of neurological and central nervous system, and reduced risk of behavioural problems. There are also various health and wellbeing benefits for the mother. Breastfeeding is safe, convenient, environmentally friendly, and is free.
