Breast Screening

Women aged 50 – 71 will be invited automatically every 3 years.
Women aged over 71 will not automatically be invited but can still have screening every three years if they want to. They will need to contact their local breast screening service to arrange this.
Trans man, trans woman or non-binary individuals will be invited according to the above age criteria if they are registered as female with a GP.

Bowel Screening

*Screening is by appointment only – no drop-in sessions*

Patients aged between 60 and 74, are invited to take part in bowel cancer screening every two years.

The programme is expanding to make it available to everyone aged 50 to 59 years. This is happening gradually over 4 years and started in April 2021. 

If you are aged 75 or over, you can ask for a screening test by calling the free bowel cancer screening helpline. 

Further information about the FIT test and how to use it is available to download in 10 different languages including Polish, Urdu, Arabic and Chinese (simplified and traditional).

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening

Men aged 64 years and over.

Men who are over 65 years and have not been screened before can ask for a test by contacting the local AAA screening service.

Retinal Screening

Lung Health Checks

*Screening is by appointment only – no drop-in sessions*

Patients must:

  • Be aged between 55 and 74
  • Registered with a GP surgery
  • Current or former smokers
If eligible for a Lung Health Check, patients will receive a letter inviting them to make an appointment – call the telephone number on the letter to book.
 
Patients cannot be seen should they turn up at the mobile unit without an appointment.

Cervical Screening (a smear test)

Offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64

  • Patient age: Under 25 (invited up to 6 months before turning 25) 
  • Patient age: 25 to 49 (invited every 3 years)
  • Patient age: 50 to 64 (invited every 5 years)
  • Patient age: 65 or older (invited if a recent test was abnormal)

Transgender (trans) man registered with a GP as female, will be sent an invitation for cervical screening. Patients registered as male won’t receive invitations. GPs or practice nurses can arrange an appointment if a patient has a cervix. Trans women do not need cervical screening.

Patients can book an appointment as soon as they receive an invitation letter.

If a patient has missed their last cervical screening, they do not need to wait for a letter to book an appointment.
