Macmillan Living with and Beyond Cancer Team (North East Lincolnshire)

Evidence has shown that many people living with cancer have unmet needs following treatment whilst others have to deal with the consequence of treatment.

People Living with and Beyond Cancer (LWABC) face numerous physical, psychological, social, spiritual and financial issues. This consequence includes chronic physical conditions including pain, fatigue, psychological conditions including depression and anxiety, financial concerns due to the inability to work, and social concerns including isolation and lack of self-esteem.

Macmillan Support Line

Who we are and what we do for People Living With Cancer, available 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm (free to call from landlines and mobiles in the UK).

Cancer Information Support Team
What? The cancer information and support team provide emotional support, a hugely diverse range of practical information and importantly they undertake a needs assessment process.
How? Via needs assessment, support with emotions, practical information, setting up records and triaging queries.

Cancer Information Nurse Specialists
What? Experienced cancer nurses provide and talk through specialist information on symptoms and diagnosis, treatment, living with cancer, palliative care, and end of life.
How? Via tests for cancer, understanding diagnosis, symptoms and side effects, treatment options, end of life and dying, explaining medical jargon

Welfare Rights Team
What? The Welfare Rights team provides information on benefits and grants people may be entitled to. They can also find out if people are eligible to apply for a Macmillan Grant to help with the financial impact of cancer.
How? Via income maximisation, personal independence payment, Universal Credit, Macmillan Grants, employment and support allowance.

Financial Guidance Services
What? Financial specialists help people manage their finances, providing guidance in areas such as mortgages, insurance, pensions, and future planning.
How? Providing information on pensions, insurance, mortgages, estate planning and financial planning. The Financial Guidance Team have referral partnerships with Nationwide and Virgin Money.

Energy Advice Team
What? Our energy specialist can help advise and guide people who are affected by cancer and struggling with their utility bills.
How? Providing information on energy company support schemes, Trust Fund Support, boiler schemes, water company support schemes, tariff considerations.

Work Support Service
What? Providing information and advice to people with cancer and carers on work issues and help with questions on rights at work, talking to your employer, work adjustments and other work concerns to support people living with cancer to make the right decisions for you at work.
How? Providing information on rights at work (The Equality Act), reasonable adjustments, returning to work, carers rights, disputes and discrimination.

Online Community
What? Macmillan’s Online Community is an online forum for people affected by cancer to both share experiences and give and get support. The Community team help facilitate a safe and supportive space for our members. Click here to join / view.
How? Via moderating the site to keep it safe, supporting members emotionally and help them to navigate the site, running projects to promote the Community, continuously developing and improving the the Community, managaing a team of Community Champions (volunteers).

Macmillan Cancer Support

Telephone Buddies campaign, available 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm (free to call from landlines and mobiles in the UK).
The service pairs the individual with a trained volunteer buddy who understands wat they’re going through. They will give them a regular call each week to provide a listening ear, talk about what’s important to them and help guide them to other cancer services that may be of assistance.

Supporting someone with cancer
If your partner, family member, friend or colleague has cancer, there can be a lot to think about. You might be a carer, or just want to help. We have information to help you with the practical, emotional and financial impacts of support someone with cancer.

BUPA Counselling and Emotional Support

Telephone lines are available 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm (free to call from landlines and mobiles in the UK).

Through BUPA, Macmillan are offering up to 4 free remotely-delivered counselling sessions for people struggling emotionally because they are living with cancer. People can access support remotely within days if they qualify to use the service.

To access the service, you should be: 

  • a person living with cancer
  • 18 years old or over
  • physically located in the UK at the time of Assessment and Counselling sessions
  • struggling emotionally because of cancer
  • feeling that your biggest current need is mental wellbeing/emotional support in relation to your cancer diagnosis
  • mentally, physically and socially able to take part in the counselling process
  • not currently receiving therapy, help or intervention elsewhere for mental health needs
  • feeling that your usual daily life is being affected by how you are feeling
  • expressing or describing symptoms of anxiety, depression and/or irritability
  • struggling to cope and feeling things in life are becoming increasingly difficult
  • a minimum of 6 months from the last time you used this service i.e. if you have used this service before, you should wait at least 6 months from your last session before accessing again
You should not be:
  • getting therapy, help or support elsewhere for mental health needs
  • looking for counselling about your mental health needs separate to your cancer diagnosis
  • in severe crisis or having suicidal thoughts
  • currently in hospital as an inpatient.

If you are in crisis, you will not be able to get immediate help using this service.

Epilepsy Action – Befriending Service

Must be over the age of 18 and be based in the UK and living with or have a close connection with someone living with epilepsy. Interest in the befriending service can be registered online.

Live chat support is available Monday – Friday, 10am – 4pm.

Suitable for people with Epilepsy, their carers, and family and friends.
